Many people think if they have, for example, a 25Mbs connection , they will download a 2500 mb sized file in 100 seconds (1.40 minutes). That's not totaly true. Without lost of anything it would be at least 800 seconds (more then 13 minutes)

There is much differents between what your provider 'sells' as speed for your connection and the real speed of your connection.

First of all, your provider counts in Megabits, you download in Megabytes.
8 bits is the same as 1 byte, so you need to divide the number of your provider with 8.  So for a 25mbs connection you will get like 3mbs.

Second, there will always be lost because of cables, distance with provider, etc. so you will almost never get the full speed.

For example: Connection with UPC
They offer: download 25mbs and Upload 1,5mbs

As you can see not much mbs lost, but then look at the small print on the bottom, download speed: 3045,9 Kbs, Upload speed 180,6 Kbs, this would be the average speed of your downloads.

When i compare this with a KPN (telecom) connection
They offer: download 10Mbs and Upload 1Mbs

The lost here is much more, here you only get like 1mbs download speed and only 89,6bks upload speed.

Many sites also cutdown the download speed to 2Mbs, so you will never get your maximum download speed.
So a "great" offer of 120Mbs for a huge amount of money is just a waste of money, because most times you won't get more then 2Mbs
